Description
Italy holds a huge concentration of historical and cultural heritage. Just in Rome area are present 47 archaeological sites, 180 museums and galleries, 13 villas and palaces (www.beniculturali.it). This amount of artworks needs to be studied and preserved. For more than 6 years, in the Montelibretti IC-CNR secondary location, we are working together with archaeologists, art historians and restorers, providing them analysis results aimed at the chemical-physical characterization of artworks materials and helping them to evaluate their state of conservation.
The priceless value of artworks requires to perform the analysis using non-invasive and non-destructive methods such as the ones based on X-Rays (ex. X Rays Fluorescence, Diffraction and Radiography) and the ones based on IR or visible radiation (ex. Reflectometry, Raman and Visible Spectroscopy). Moreover often it isn’t possible to move artworks from the places where they are displayed or conserved, therefore is essential having portable instrumentation in order to perform the analysis in situ.
We present some of last results obtained on paintings from Corsini and Barberini Galleries, “Eretum Chariot”, soil blocks from Civic Archaeological Museum of Fara in Sabina (Ri).
